Energy cooperation “illuminates” the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the “Belt and Road” initiative and the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. For a long time, China and Pakistan have worked together to promote the high-quality development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Among them, energy cooperation has “illuminated” the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, continuously promoting exchanges between the two countries to be deeper, more practical, and benefit more people.

“I visited Pakistan’s various energy projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and witnessed Pakistan’s severe power shortage situation 10 years ago to today’s energy projects in various places providing Pakistan with safe and stable power supply. The Pakistani side thanks China for promoting Pakistan’s economic development. “Pakistan Power Minister Hulam Dastir Khan said at a recent event.

According to data from China’s National Development and Reform Commission, as of November last year, 12 energy cooperation projects under the corridor have been commercially operated, providing nearly one-third of Pakistan’s electricity supply. This year, the energy cooperation projects under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor have continued to deepen and become solid, making important contributions to improving the electricity consumption of local people.

Recently, the rotor of the No. 1 unit of the last generating set of Pakistan’s Sujijinari Hydropower Station (SK Hydropower Station) invested and constructed by China Gezhouba Group was successfully hoisted into place. The smooth hoisting and placement of the rotor of the unit indicates that the installation of the main unit of the SK hydropower station project is about to be completed. This hydropower station on the Kunha River in Mansera, Cape Province, northern Pakistan, is about 250 kilometers away from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. It started construction in January 2017 and is one of the priority projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. A total of 4 impulse hydro-generator sets with a unit capacity of 221MW are installed in the power station, which is currently the world’s largest impulse hydro-generator unit under construction. Up to now, the overall construction progress of the SK hydropower station is close to 90%. After it is completed and put into operation, it is expected to generate an average of 3.212 billion kWh annually, save about 1.28 million tons of standard coal, reduce 3.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and provide energy for more than 1 million households. Affordable, clean electricity for Pakistani households.

Another hydropower station under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the Karot Hydropower Station in Pakistan, has also recently ushered in the first anniversary of grid-connected and safe operation for power generation. Since it was connected to the grid for power generation on June 29, 2022, Karot Power Plant has continued to improve the construction of the safety production management system, compiled more than 100 safety production management systems, procedures, and operation instructions, formulated and implemented training plans, and strictly implemented various rules and regulations. Ensure the safe and stable operation of the power station. At present, it is the hot and scorching summer season, and Pakistan has a huge demand for electricity. The 4 generating units of the Karot Hydropower Station are operating at full capacity, and all employees are working hard on the front line to ensure the safe operation of the hydropower station. Mohammad Merban, a villager in Kanand Village near the Karot project, said: “This project has brought tangible benefits to our surrounding communities and improved the infrastructure and living conditions in the area.” After the hydropower station was built, the village Power cuts are no longer required, and Muhammad’s youngest son, Inan, no longer has to do homework in the dark. This “green pearl” shining on the Jilum River is continuously delivering clean energy and lighting up the better life of Pakistanis.

These energy projects have brought a strong impetus to the pragmatic cooperation between China and Pakistan, continuously promoting the exchanges between the two countries to be deeper, more practical, and benefit more people, so that people in Pakistan and the entire region can see the magic of the “Belt and Road” charm. Ten years ago, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was only on paper, but today, this vision has been translated into more than 25 billion US dollars in various projects, including energy, infrastructure, and information technology and socio-economic development. Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Planning, Development and Special Projects of Pakistan, said in his speech at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that the success of the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor demonstrates the friendly exchanges between Pakistan and China, mutual benefit and win-win results, and the benefit of the people world model. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor further promotes economic and trade cooperation between the two countries on the basis of traditional political mutual trust between Pakistan and China. China proposed to build the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor under the “Belt and Road” initiative, which not only contributes to the local economic and social development, but also injects impetus into the peaceful development of the region. As a flagship project of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will closely connect the economies of the two countries, and unlimited development opportunities will emerge from this. The development of the corridor is inseparable from the joint efforts and dedication of the governments and peoples of the two countries. It is not only a bond of economic cooperation, but also a symbol of friendship and trust. It is believed that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will continue to guide the development of the entire region.
